I
have walked in the DHA Walk for the Animals for the last 20 years. It is my way
of making a commitment to the animals. I am determined to raise as much money
as I can, and each year I challenge myself to top the amount I raised the year
before. I started out raising a few hundred, and in all honesty, it was not
hard to do. Each year I brought in more than the last, and I think I became
obsessed with beating my own record. My all-time high was a couple of years ago
when I raised approximately $11,500!
Fundraising for the Walk is fun, and I love checking my mailbox to find out how
many checks came. I have a strategy, and it has been very successful. I do more
than just pass the pledge form around. I send letters to my friends and
neighbors, I talk to people at the establishments I frequent to encourage them
to donate. I check out businesses in the phone book that are in some way
affiliated with animals, and of course, Facebook. Think about the number of
people you come in contact with—the possibilities are never ending. It is not
difficult to ask for donations when you know you are doing it out of love for
the animals.
Every year I make the Walk my own personal campaign. I dedicate my time and do
my very best to bring in as much money as possible. The event itself is so much
fun, but it's important to remember the purpose... the goal is to bring in much
needed money to keep the shelter up and operating so we can continue to care
for homeless pets. So, this year I will walk again, because I know my walking
has and will continue to make a difference. I always say how much I love
animals—my participation in the Walk and the donations I bring in will prove
it.
