Why I Walk for the Animals

Michele Ahwash and ChelseaNearly 10 years ago, I stopped by a convenience store and saw a brochure relating to the 12th Annual Walk for the Animals by Delaware Humane Association. I had always been very interested in animals but had never known about this local organization, a no kill shelter—something very important to me. I decided to participate in the Walk as a way to get to know DHA. I didn't have a dog to walk with that year, but had a wonderful time all the same.

That experience led to me becoming a volunteer with DHA. I feared when I first started visiting the shelter that I would be sad at the sight of so many homeless animals. However, when I saw the fantastic work that everyone (staff and volunteers alike) does in rehabilitating and finding forever homes for all of the animals, that fear soon left.

The more time I spent at the shelter, the more I wanted to do for them. I've now grown to contribute to the shelter in other ways, such as chairing the Planned Giving Committee. All of my involvement with DHA brings great satisfaction.

Chelsea and Chance
Five years later I became a DHA foster parent, then adopted my dog Chelsea from DHA, at which time my life changed immensely—for the better, of course. I simply cannot imagine my life without her. We recently expanded our family by adopting a kitten named Chance from DHA, and the two of them are best friends.

Chelsea and I participated in our first Walk together four years ago as a way to bring awareness to the wonderful work that DHA does for the animals and to give thanks to our finding each other. We will participate in this year's Walk for the same reasons.

This year we created an online fundraising page for the Walk through FirstGiving to convey our story and promote all of the fantastic work of the shelter. We have raised funds through our FirstGiving web page by sending out emails to friends, family and business associates, as well as posting the links on Facebook and LinkedIn. We are already more than half way to our goal in less than one week, and I have no doubt that we will surpass it. Other ways that we promote the Walk and the work of DHA is simply by telling our story to neighbors (or even strangers) on the walking trail at home or in the park.

Chelsea and I can't wait to join in this year's Walk. Last time she had to be carried to the finish line, but we've since purchased a stroller in case she needs a little help to make a timely finish!
