The Pal for Pits Program
FREE Spay/Neuter for Pit Bulls and Pit Bull Mixes

Friends for Responsible Pet Care is a nonprofit corporation, dedicated to ending pet overpopulation. FRPC will sponser free spay/neuter if you are:
- The owner of a Pit Bull Terrier or Pit Bull Mix (if in doubt, DHA has sole discretion to determine breed)
- A resident of the City of Wilmington or New Castle County (proof of residence required – driver’s license, electric bill, etc.)
- On public assistance or earn less than $38,000/yr (proof required – W-2 form or other documentation)
To qualify for this free program, your dog must be:
- Well-behaved and safe for medical staff to handle
- At least 4 months old and no more than 2 years old
- 3 pounds – 50 pounds
In addition to getting neutered, your dog will be vaccinated, microchipped, photographed, and issued a City or County license. If you live in the City of Wilmington, you must register your dog with the City. The registration fee for this is NOT included in the Pals for Pits program.
City of Wilmington residents:
Spay/neuter surgery – No charge
Distemper and rabies vaccinations – No charge
Heartworm testing (optional) – $25
Microchip – No charge
City of Wilmington license – No charge
Photograph of dog for file – No charge
City of Wilmington Pit Bull Registration - $80
New Castle County residents:
Spay/neuter surgery – no charge
Distemper and rabies vaccinations – no charge
Heartworm testing (optional) – $25
Microchip – no charge
New Castle County dog license – no charge
Other Important Information
Your dog will be scheduled for surgery only after completing an initial Pals for Pits assessment. You must make an appointment for an assessment. At the assessment, your dog will be weighed and our staff will confirm that he/she is well-behaved and safe for our staff to handle. Please call our Front Desk staff at (302) 571-0111 to schedule the assessment.
All surgeries to be performed at our facility. Drop off time is 10 am
the morning of the surgery, and you must be able to stay up to an hour
while pre-anesthesia takes effect. Pick up time is 4 pm the same day.
